NEW ORLEANS NORTH

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at & 7:30 pm Hurricane Katrina ravaged much of the quaint, old, Southern city that gave birth to America's greatest, artistic gift to the world, New Orleans Jazz. The blues, the joys and the stomps so lovingly created by Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Joe King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and others, are still bringing people together around the world in such diverse places as London, Paris, Moscow, New York, Vancouver and Whitehorse. And it is this soul-soothing, spirit-lifting music that has brought together the members of New Orleans North.

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at & 7:30 pm

Lloyd Arntzen discovered Sidney Bechet by the way of 78 rpm records on the dusty plains of Saskatchewan eons ago, and brought this passion with him to the Pacific Coast. Meanwhile, in the remote Canadian North, Grant Simpson was honing his skills as a stride pianist in Whitehorse, Yukon. Lloyd and Grant met and the seed was planted that they wanted to play together as often as possible. Trumpeter Bria Skonberg and drummer Graeme Peters were added to the mix a little later - and when the circumstances are just right, guitarist Don Ogilvie is a welcome addition to the group, And thus, New Orleans North was born.

Anne - Julie Caron with Akiko Tominga

Canadian percussionists Anne - Julie Caron is recognized by the greatest masters of her field as one of the most remarkable talents of her generation. Mainly recognized as a marimbist, Miss Caron's rapidly blooming career as an orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist is causing her to be sought after both in Canada and abroad.
Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 7:30 pm

House of Doc

House of Doc is in the tradition of the old time band. With an unorthodox blend of Celtic, folk, and blues influences, House of Doc has transplanted mountain music to the middle of Manitoba to create a distinctly Canadian sound - Prairiegrass. Dan Wiebe, sister Rebecca Harder and her husband Matthew Harder compose and perform as only a family does, with uncanny unity and cohesion. The entire Wiebe family has been singing together since early childhood where they began to hone their craft as Sunday morning vocalists in a Mennonite congregation. See this group perform on:

Monday, April 14,2008 at 7:30 p.m.

House of Doc was born after Matthew Harder, already a professional musician, clearly saw the potential in this remarkable family of musicans. Jesse Krause is the newest member of the Docs. Infusing musical inspirations such as Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel and Spirit of the West with intricate harmonies, sophisticated counterpoint and a down-home delivery, the band has captured its story with a rich and sensitive attention to detail.
